A coyote killed a cat two weeks ago near the Ralph#39;s on Huntington Drive. On the other side of Alhambra, on Marengo and Valley near the 10, the Nite family Chihuahua Slug was almost another victim, the Pasadena Star-News reports.

I really didn#39;t think it was a coyote, that was the last thing in my head, Michael Nite said.

Nite chased the sound of Slug#39;s cries down the street in his car, simultaneously calling 9-1-1.

Nite finally found Slug crumpled on a neighbor#39;s lawn, with the coyote standing a few feet away from him. Nite scared the coyote off and then took Slug, who was barely breathing, to the nearest animal hospital.

A map of coyote reports that have been submitted to the Alhambra Source.

Slug survived, but Nite wanted to make sure others knew their small pets were vulnerible, even in Alhambra which seems fairly remote from the San Gabriel Mountains.

Ken Pellman, spokesman for the Agricultural Commissioner#39;s Office, told the Star-News that Nite#39;s story is not surprising. There had been 10 coyote complaints to the authority in 2011. The coyote was probably just walking the street, might not have even known the owner was there, he said. It see#39;s this small animal out in front and thinks, `Oh, perfect.#39; Coyotes are generally nocturnal, so it is not surprising that a coyote would be out there.

We will continue to map coyote reports that have been submitted to the Alhambra Source. If you spot one, please send an e-mail to editor@alhambrasource.org or write the location, time, and any additional details below.

NEW YORK, Feb. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ –
Crunch Fitness is once again calling on the fitness community to “Love their Muscles” in support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s efforts to help find a cure for ALS, a debilitating muscular disease. In the month of February, Crunch’s “Love Your Muscles” campaign, powered by a dedicated website at
www.loveyourmuscles.com , will provide various avenues for Crunch members and non-members to participate, donate and support MDA’s Augie’s Quest fundraising initiatives.

Augie’s Quest was founded by fitness pioneer and founder of Life Fitness, Augie Nieto. Augie was diagnosed with ALS in March 2005, and since, has made it his personal mission to find a cure for the terminal disease by partnering with the MDA to create Augie’s Quest. Since their inception, Augie’s Quest has raised over $30 million for MDA.

Throughout February, Crunch has committed to donating $5 for every new membership and $10 for every new personal training package purchased to MDA’s Augie’s Quest. Members can get in on the action by registering for an intensive group fitness weekend workshop, offered throughout the month, giving participants an extended version of their favorite classes. They can show their muscles some love by keeping them stylish with either a Love Your Muscles eco-friendly tee or hoodie or by simply donating directly on behalf of their favorite muscle (butt, biceps or pecs!) and share their contribution via in-gym mobiles and a social media share tool found at
www.loveyourmuscles.com    .

Saturday, February 25th is Crunch’s official Love Your Muscles Day, in which all locations nationwide will be free and open to the public. Workshops and training demos will be available, along with a special personal training offer – $30 for 30-minutes and $60 for 60-minutes, which can also be purchased at
www.loveyourmuscles.com . 100% of the proceeds for all of these initiatives will be donated to Augie’s Quest .

For more information about Love Your Muscles and MDA’s Augie’s Quest, please visit
www.loveyourmuscles.com . As we get closer to finding a cure for ALS, there has never been a more vital time to support the MDA’s Augie’s Quest fundraising initiatives.

#13;

Read the Police Beat with any regularity and you notice a fair amount of coyote calls. The police seem to get as many calls about coyote roaming the area (usually the southeastern edge of Tarrytown) as they do about deers getting hit by cars.

#13;

The two — coyotes and deer — go hand in hand, says Sergeant Alex Cossifos of the Tarrytown PD. “The deer is why theyre here.”

#13;

Yes, and no, said Department of Environmental Conservation Wildlife Biologist Kevin Clarke who examines such trends in our region. The coyotes do not coincide with the deer population per se, he said, however they are very “opportunistic” and go after easy targets like wounded deer (we have these) and fawns in the spring.

#13;

We picked Clarkes knowing brain for a while to find out more about these coyotes, if they pose a real risk, and what are they doing here and for how long.

#13;

The coyotes have been moving into our Westchester suburbs for the last 20 years or so, though there are no real numbers on this, and they love the suburbs as much the humans do.

#13;

“Were all looking for easy food for survival,” Clarke said. People on generous properties often unknowingly attract coyotes with their easy food sources: plants, pet food, bird seed, compost, even pets. Coyotes generally eat small mammals (moles, voles, mice) but they also go for berries, vegetables, bird seed, birds. “They will eat just about anything.”

#13;

Though they are more active at night, food is readily available here at all times of day, so it is not so unusual to sight coyotes by day. Late winter/early spring is when they are the most sighted, as they are more aggressive about feeding their new pups and providing protection, and more dangerously territorial.

#13;

You should not leave small pets outside unattended, or small children for that matter. Only take garbage out right before you need to. Dont leave open compost outside.

#13;

Somewhat like bears, who are becoming increasingly comfortable around people, coyotes are too. Its the goal to create a more hostile environment for them so they dont feel welcome alongside people, said Clarke.

#13;

If you see a coyote, dont run (like prey would, triggering the idea in them that you in fact prey) but make a ruckus. Spray them with a hose, throw stones, whatever it takes to ward them off. “As they get more accustomed to people, we may see more of them, Clarke said. You dont want to harass them per se but we dont want them familiar with people.

#13;

The DEC even encourages hunting and trapping, both seasons of which are long “and fairly liberal” for coyotes. Oct 25 through February 15 is trapping season; hunting from Oct. 1 through March 25. “There is very little hunting and trapping pressure on them in Westchester,” he said, which would be beneficial to discouraging their growth here. But he cautioned folks to “never be mislead that removing one will do it. Others will just usually move in to fill the void.”

#13;

Not that he dislikes coyotes. “They are good looking animals,” Clarke said.

#13;

Contrary to the standard image of a white animal, they come in a range of colors from German Shepherd-like to red to gray to black. The coyotes that have migrated here have mixed on some minor level with wolves en route (from Canada and the west) so they can be bigger and more pack oriented than their cousins elsewhere in the country – and they are all over the country. “In most habitats we have coyotes now,” Clarke said.

#13;

They may seem bigger than they really are though, commonly weighing 35 to 40 pounds. Size might not stop them from occasionally taking on a full size deer or a small child. “Every once in a while across the country a coyote will be brazen and bite a small child,” Clarke said. Also, a coyote isnt a rabies-carrying species but any mammal can get rabies and any animal with rabies is a dangerous animal.

#13;

Sergeant Cossifos said, “theres not much we can do about [the coyotes] unless theyre aggressive. Thats nature.”

GRAND RAPIDS — If you think the Super Bowl is a good excuse to gorge on fat-and-sodium laden food, sprawl in a recliner and scream at the TV, then pull up an exercise ball and listen to Tina Vande Guchte.

Youll be a winner if you spend the night moving and grooving, she said. Youll have a much more enjoyable time.

Vande Guchte sees Sundays game as a great fitness opportunity, and not just for football players on the field. Of course, she sees just about every event that way: She is a triathlete and a fitness program coordinator for Holland Hospital, and she has a degree in exercise science.

Vande Guchte is not opposed to Super Bowl buffet grazing and TV watching particularly when there are nachos and cheesecake around. But she believes in a balanced approach to calories in, calories out.

Here are her tips to make Super Bowl XLVI an active, healthy and fun event, whether youre rooting for the Giants or the Patriots, or just watching for the David Beckham underwear commercial:

bull; Set the stage by leaving handheld weights and resistance bands near the TV and use them while you watch.

bull; Provide a few exercise balls for alternative seating. Lean back on one, stretch out the spine and make room for digestion.

bull; Turn commercial breaks into movement breaks. Designate someone to lead your guests in jumping jacks, lunges, shoulder circles, side-to-side hops.

bull; Play the odds with exercise: You can bet someone five push-ups that your team will convert on a 3rd-and-long play, she said.

bull; Dont leave the game just to the pros skip the halftime show, and bring your guests outside for a quick football game. Who doesnt come in more refreshed and revived after getting outside and moving? Vande Guchte said.

If you want to get really ambitious, Vande Guchte suggests providing hula hoops and a little extra space for guests to try one. She is big on hula hoops. She teaches hula hoop classes for adults, using larger, weighted hoops that are easier for them to manage. Theyre wonderful for the spine, awesome for everyday exercise, she said.

Cheesecake and nachos aside, Vande Guchte also recommends a healthy approach to snacking. Beside the chili and chips, offer fruit skewers with low-fat dips and fresh veggies, she says.

Her advice is echoed by Dr. Chris Howell, an internist with Lakeshore Health Partners, an affiliate of Holland Hospital. He advises loading 75 percent of your plate with healthy food options and using the other 25 percent for splurges like the double-cheese meat dip nachos.

The same advice applies to beverages: Have three non-alcoholic drinks for every beer you consume, he says.

Thats a safe ratio for keeping yourself hydrated while youre watching what undoubtedly will be commercial after commercial for beer, Howell said.

The combination of healthy food and lots of movement will pay off Monday morning, the health experts say.

Youre going to feel better regardless of whether your team wins or loses, Vande Guchte said. Youll feel better and have a better attitude. Its the way to avoid Super Bowl wipeout.

Do you have any suggestions for a healthy Super Bowl experience? If so, share them in the comments below.

Auburn Hills, MI (Sports Network) – Joe Johnson scored 30 points, including a game-tying three-pointer in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, to lead the Atlanta Hawks to a 107-101 overtime victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Marvin Williams added 22 points and eight rebounds, while Josh Smith had 19 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks in the Hawks third win in four games.

Greg Monroe paced the Pistons with 22 points and 11 boards in Detroits 13th loss in its last 15 games. Brandon Knight contributed 20 points and a career- high eight assists, and Jason Maxiell scored a season-high 19 points off the bench in defeat.

We take every loss personally, not just a close loss. I think every loss is a personal loss, Knight said. You just dont favor one over the other, but this one will hurt a little bit more.

Atlanta trailed 68-63 entering the fourth quarter, but opened the frame with a 7-2 swing to knot the game at 70.

The Pistons, though, scored the next eight points to jump ahead again.

Detroit held at least a three-point lead over the next seven minutes until a pair of Austin Daye free throws put the Pistons up 85-76 with 1:47 to play.

After the teams traded buckets, Williams sank a shot from beyond the arc to cut the deficit to three with 33.5 seconds left on the clock.

The Pistons Rodney Stuckey then had the ball roll out of bounds off his arm after a scramble on the ground, giving the ball back to the Hawks.

Johnson took the ball and set up on the top of the key on Atlantas ensuing possession. He then turned his back to the net before throwing up a turnaround jumper that dropped into the net for the game-tying shot with 1.9 seconds left.

Knights three-pointer at the buzzer bounced wide high off the glass to force overtime.

The extra period belonged entirely to the Hawks, as Atlanta opened overtime with a 12-2 run capped by back-to-back treys by Williams and Smith to jump out to a 99-89 lead.

Detroit could not get any closer than six points from there and the Hawks made enough free throws down the stretch to hold off a late push by the Pistons.

We were relentless. We never gave up, said Johnson. Even when things didnt look so bright for us, we hung in there, stayed with each other, stayed mentally tough, stayed with the game plan and were able to pull a big win out.

Detroit made just 6-of-23 shots from the floor in the first quarter, but held a 17-15 lead as the Hawks committed nine turnovers in the opening frame.

The Pistons never trailed in the second quarter and after five consecutive points by Williams tied the game at 29, Detroit closed out the half on a 17-6 run to take a 46-35 lead into the break.

Atlanta battled back with a 17-6 run to get within one, 56-55, with 4:00 to play in the third, but Detroit scored 12 of the next 20 points and took a 68-63 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Let folks in the Midwick Tract know to watch their small pets. There#39;s a coyote roaming. Saw it on Cabrillo tonight.

We#39;ve heard via Facebook about a lot of other spottings in the area. Nancy Ruiz wrote that on Wednesady night near Grandview Market: I saw a coyote and it saw me. The coyote wasn#39;t scared, but I sure was.

Earl Jones wrote that he saw one last on Electric Avenue at 3am (Linda Moody#39;s neighbor saw one there as well). Daniel Dupill worte that he once knew of a den on the hillside between Hampden Terrace and Palentine. We could hear them howl in concert with fire and police sirens regularly – and see them often on Hampden Terrace. And Auntie Apple said she spotten one in front of Ramona Convent. Fernando Morales said he saw a baby one running toward another place of worship, St Therese.

John Garica said he spots them on Huntington Drive, Mauricio Perez said Woodward and Fifth was the spot, and Kelly Yamagashi said for her it was North Olive and Pine. A pack of three were chilling on my lawn, she writes.

Have you spotted a coyote? Please post the address/ intersection below or by e-mailing editor@alhambrasource.org and we will put together a coyote spotting map. And if you have any pictures, please share those as well.

COOKEVILLE — A resident of Green Acres taking his pet dog outside on Saturday evening met a coyote just outside his back door.

And though he was able to put his dog back inside and shoo the coyote away, he worries that pet owners not aware of the problem of coyotes might lose their pets to the wild animals.

That is a very real possibility, and the presence of coyotes in city areas is very common now, according to Cookeville Police Officer Danny Lindsey, who is an animal control officer here.

Coyotes are everywhere in Cookeville now, from the neighborhoods to the middle of town, Lindsey said. Its more of a problem now than its ever been, and we are advising people to keep their pets close, in a fenced area if possible.

He said coyotes have been flushed out of their natural habitat by increased building and development and they are out there looking for food.

Theyre scavengers, and theyre wild and they will kill small dogs or cats, Lindsey said.

They may be attracted to residential areas where they can find squirrels or pets running freely, he said.

A family member of the Green Acres subdivision resident who saw a coyote just outside his back door on Saturday said her family has bird feeders.

And that attracts the squirrels, she said.

She said Saturday was not the first time coyotes have been seen in that area and also said she has heard that coyotes are also preying on small pets in Nashville neighborhoods.

My family loves animals, and we are just concerned about making other people aware of the coyote problem. We especially worry about pets that are kept outside, some of them tied up.

Animal Control Officer Lindsey said he has received many calls from Cookeville residents reporting coyotes in their neighborhoods. He said he advises people to contact the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency, which attempts to catch the animals.

But if they are found in peoples yards, I try to help, Lindsey said. We can set live traps (a cage), and that works on coyote pups, but its next to impossible to trap an adult coyote.

He said coyotes look something like a medium sized dog, though they have a longer snout.

They are grayish black, he said.

The Green Acres resident said the coyote he saw had a beautiful long, fluffy tail.

Several people in Cookeville have reported to me that coyotes have attacked their pet dogs, Officer Lindsey said. I advise them to keep their pets close and in a pen if possible.

Boston, MA (Sports Network) – Temporarily, the Celtics may not have Rajon Rondo or Ray Allen in the lineup, but they still have Paul Pierce.

As the Pacers cut Bostons lead to two in the third quarter, Pierce put the team on his back, netting 17 of his 28 points in the stanza as the Celtics took down Indiana, 94-87, for their fourth straight win.

We had unbelievable energy, Celtics head coach Doc Rivers said. We thought the key was to force them into playing versus our half court defense. Thought we did that.

Pierce also added 10 rebounds and eight assists for the Celtics.

Rondo sat out his fifth consecutive game due to a wrist injury, while Allen missed his third straight contest with a jammed left ankle.

But Pierce has really stepped up in their absence, averaging 23.4 points, 8.2 assists and 6.4 rebounds over his last five outings — including Friday nights game.

Danny Granger netted 21 points to lead the Pacers, who went 1-of-19 from beyond the arc.

We had a lot of great looks that didnt go down, Pacers head coach Frank Vogel said. Some of that was their defense. You have to credit their defense, they shut Orlando down twice, they shut us down tonight. We didnt play a good game and you have to play a good game to beat this basketball team in their building.

An 8-2 Pacers spurt to start the second half, capped by David Wests jumper, trimmed Bostons lead to 44-42.

But Pierce poured in nine points as the Celtics countered with a 15-4 run to increase the advantage back to double-digits, 57-46, midway through the third.

Boston took a 71-61 lead into the fourth.

I like to come out in the third quarter and be aggressive, Pierce said. I focus on trying to get better as the game goes on.

The Celtics led by as many as 16 in the final stanza as the Pacers were unable to rally down the stretch.

Chris Wilcox had six points as Boston led 23-17 after the first quarter. The Pacers turned the ball over six times in the opening stanza.

Boston used a 10-0 run in between the first and second quarters to take a 27-17 advantage with 10:51 remaining in the half. Bostons bench provided the spark, going 4-for-4 from the field during the spurt.

West nailed a jumper at the first-half buzzer to cut Indianas deficit to 42-34 heading into the locker room. Boston held Indiana to just 30 percent shooting from the floor in the opening half.
